Illinois ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment for 2027
Dates, subsidies, and what to check before you pick a Get Covered Illinois plan
Illinois residents who buy individual health insurance on their own — not through an employer — enroll through Get Covered Illinois, the state marketplace. Open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027.
This guide is educational. Plan menus, issuer participation, and subsidy rules are set each year. We compare what is actually for sale in DuPage and Cook County during the window — we do not invent premiums or promise a metal level.
The 2027 enrollment window
Mark two dates:
- November 1, 2026 — open enrollment begins for January 2027 coverage.
- January 15, 2027 — the window closes.
In a typical cycle, enroll by mid-December for a January 1 start. Applications later in the window often begin February 1. If your 2026 plan is ending, do not assume auto-renewal is the plan you want. Get Covered Illinois has already told customers that some 2026 issuers will not offer marketplace plans in 2027 — those households need an active choice during open enrollment, not a hope that the old card still works in January.
What to compare besides the monthly premium
A cheaper premium with the wrong network is not a savings. We walk Illinois clients through:
- Doctors and hospitals in the western suburbs — HMO, EPO, and PPO directories change
- Prescriptions and specialty drugs on the formulary, including prior authorization
- The deductible and whether you can actually fund it
- The out-of-pocket maximum — the ceiling for covered in-network care after premiums
- Premium tax credits and, if you qualify, cost-sharing reductions on certain silver plans
- Whether an HSA-eligible high-deductible plan fits, or whether it only looks cheaper until the first MRI
ACA essential health benefits and preexisting-condition protections are why we treat marketplace coverage as the default for year-round medical risk. Short-term medical is a different product.
Special enrollment is not a second open enrollment
Lose a job, move, get married, have a baby, or lose other creditable coverage, and you may get a limited window outside the annual dates. The event has to be documented. “I meant to shop in November” is not a qualifying event.
If you are leaving employer coverage, bring the COBRA notice and the date coverage actually ends. We map Medicare separately if you are approaching 65 — marketplace and Medicare are not the same enrollment calendar.
What we recommend before November 1
- List your doctors and medications before you fall in love with a premium.
- Estimate household income the way the marketplace asks for it, so the tax credit is not a guess.
- Read notices if your current issuer is leaving Get Covered Illinois for 2027.
- Do not substitute short-term medical for a full year of ACA coverage unless you understand what it excludes.
- Talk to an independent agent — we compare individual health options and help you enroll, instead of leaving you alone with a metal-level chart.
